A woman saw a dog suffering from extreme thirst beside a well. She was described by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a prostitute, yet when she saw the animal close to death, she went to the trouble of drawing water for it.

The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah forgave her because of that act. The story is recorded in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, making it one of the well-known authentic accounts about mercy toward animals.

The Dog Was Dying of Thirst

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ spoke about a prostitute who came across a dog near a well.

It was a hot day, and the dog was panting from thirst. It was moving around the well because it needed water, and the narration in Sahih al-Bukhari says that the animal was close to dying from thirst.

The woman could have continued on her way. Instead, she decided to help the animal.

She took off her shoe and used it to draw water from the well. Sahih al-Bukhari explains that she tied the shoe to her head-covering so that she could use it to reach the water. She then gave the water to the dog.

The Prophet ﷺ said that she was forgiven because of what she had done.

Sahih Muslim contains the same story in two narrations. One describes her simply as a prostitute, while another identifies her as a prostitute from the people of Bani Isra’il. The second narration also states that the dog was so thirsty that it was close to death.

There is no name given for the woman in these authentic narrations. They also do not provide details about her life before or after this incident.

What Made Her Act So Important?

The striking part of the story is not simply that she gave water to a dog. It is that she went to considerable effort to save an animal that was suffering.

The woman did not have an easy way to reach the water. She used her shoe to draw it from the well and then gave it to the dog. The Prophet ﷺ specifically connected this act with her forgiveness.

This does not mean that her profession was considered permissible in Islam. Prostitution itself is prohibited. Rather, the hadith shows that a person’s sins do not prevent Allah from showing mercy to them, and that a sincere act of goodness can have enormous value.

The narration also does not say that the woman was forgiven because prostitution was somehow overlooked. It gives one specific reason for the forgiveness: she showed mercy to a thirsty creature.

Islam And Kindness to Animals

The story also needs to be understood alongside other teachings about animals in Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ told his companions about a man who became extremely thirsty while traveling. He found a well, climbed down, drank from it, and came back out. Then he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of thirst.

The man realized that the dog was suffering from thirst just as he had been. He went back into the well, filled his shoe with water, carried it back up, and gave the water to the dog.

The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah appreciated his deed and forgave him. When the companions asked whether people could receive a reward for treating animals well, he replied that there is a reward for serving living creatures.

In another authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ described a woman who was punished because she confined a cat until it died. She neither fed nor watered it, nor released it so that it could find food for itself. Sunnah

These two accounts show opposite examples. In one, an animal was neglected and harmed. In the other, an animal in desperate need was helped.

The story gives a simple lesson about mercy.

The woman was not praised for her profession. In fact, the hadith explicitly identifies her as a prostitute. What the Prophet ﷺ highlighted was a particular act of compassion toward a creature in desperate need.

It also shows why small acts should not automatically be considered insignificant. From a human perspective, giving water to a dog may seem like a very ordinary deed. Yet the Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah forgave this woman because of it.

There is also an important limit to what we can say about the story. The hadith does not tell us that this single action erased every consequence of her past in a general sense, nor does it give us details about her later life.

For Muslims, that is enough to understand the central message. Showing mercy to a helpless creature has value before Allah, even when the person performing the act is someone whose past contains serious wrongdoing.
